La Pasqua (Easter to you and me) is a special time in Italy. Each region has its own way of celebrating, alongside the popular religious ceremonies common to the whole country. Palm Sunday sees every church in Italy filled with baskets of palm leaves and olive branches, all to be distributed to the congregation, once blessed by the priest. In Rome, thousands of worshippers throng St. Peters Square, to receive palms blessed by the Pope himself. And Good Friday sees the ceremony of foot-washing re-enacted at many altars. Together with religion, food is central to the festivities. Even by Italian standards, the Easter dinner is something special. The centre-piece is often Agnellino, roasted baby lamb. Eggs naturally feature in many dishes too, such as Brodetto Pasquale, a broth-based Easter soup. The shops are full of traditional Easter breads, along with Colomba, a traditional dove-shaped cake. And the beautifully wrapped chocolate eggs, containing little gifts, are sure to delight children of all ages. For a taste of Easter, Italian style, book a short (or long) break to any of our great destinations now. Early spring is a perfect time to be in Italy with sunny days, crystal clear sea, carpets of wild flowers and food and wine at its best. |
