Entry/Exit System (EES)

What it is:
The EES is a new electronic system that records when non-EU visitors enter and leave the Schengen Area. This includes most EU countries (except Ireland and Cyprus) as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

How it works:
When you arrive at the border, you’ll scan your passport and have your fingerprints and a photo taken. According to GOV.UK, this process will be rolled out gradually from 12 October 2025 to 10 April 2026.

Why it’s being introduced:
To speed up border checks and replace the old system of manually stamping passports.

Good to know:
You’ll need a biometric passport (one with an electronic chip) to use the automated gates and self-service systems.

European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)

What it is:
ETIAS is a new online travel authorisation for short trips to countries in the Schengen Area. It will be required for visitors from visa-exempt countries — including the UK.

How it works:
Before you travel, you’ll need to complete a quick online application for an ETIAS authorisation. Once approved, it will allow you to visit the Schengen Area for short stays.

When it starts:
ETIAS is due to launch in the last few months of 2026.

Where it applies:
ETIAS covers travel to most EU countries (except Ireland) as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
