This event is a very vibrant and colourful festival and dates back to 1711, when Sardinia, under Spanish domination decided to pay tribute to King Philip V of Spain. In 1899 King Umberto and Queen Margherita Savoia came to Sassari for the inauguration of the monument dedicated to King Vittorio Emanuele II.

La Cavalcata Sarda

The Sardinian Cavalcade is a great celebration where people from all over Sardinia show up in traditional clothes and jewellery.

In the morning there is a long parade, and in the afternoon there are performances of skill on horseback in the hippodrome.

In the evening, people gather in the Piazza Italia of Sassari, with traditional dances to the sound of Sardinian Launeddas, a traditional woodwind instrument made of three pipes.

The sounds of launeddas and accordions mark the end on this celebration.

Festivals and exhibitions of traditional songs are also scheduled in the days before the Cavalcata Sarda.
