Villa Il Convento is a former medieval convent converted into a charming dwelling with private pool, surrounded by olive groves and with wonderful views. It is a marvellous location for a family holiday in the heart of Umbria, with many historic towns and villages within easy reach.
The main villa accommodates up to 8 people, the nearby guest house has 2 independent apartments, and each one can accommodate 4 people. The entire property sleeps up 16. If only the main villa is booked, guests staying at the property will have exclusive use of the entire property and pool.
Villa Il Convento still preserves many of its original features: large fireplaces, arches, exposed wooden beams and uneven terracotta floors. The villa is spread out on two levels. The main entrance hall comprises a beautiful cloister that serves as a connection between the various parts of the house. This is the original cloister where nuns used to meet and pray together centuries ago. Off to one side is the large country kitchen with a wood-fired oven. From here there is direct access to the garden, with plenty of space for outdoor dining. There is a large hammock and barbecue area. There is also a laundry room.
On the other side of the cloister is the main living area of the villa. It is spacious and consists of a dining room overlooking the pool, a second and smaller kitchen with access to a characteristic stone cellar (perfect for storing wine), billiard room, living room with television, a reading room, a small bathroom and an elegant living room with a fireplace. From the living room, a staircase leads to the first floor which is dedicated entirely to the sleeping area. It consists of three double bedrooms (2 queen size beds and 1 king size), two single bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, one with a walk-in shower, and a second bathroom with a bathtub.
Only about 20 metres from the main building is the lovely country house inside the same garden and pool area. This guesthouse has its own outside sheltered dining area. It has been recently restored - new bathrooms and kitchenettes, new beds – and tastefully furnished with a modern and simple style. This cottage consist of 2 independent apartments, one on the ground floor and one on the first floor. Each apartment consists of a dining room/kitchenette, two double bedrooms and a shared bathroom with a walk-in shower. It is possible to rent just the main villa, or the villa and the entire guest house, or the main villa + 1 apartment. The second apartment, if not required, will be left locked so that the guests staying at the villa and at the first apartment will have the exclusive use of the property and pool.
In the beautiful well-kept park surrounding the villa is the large swimming pool, where guests can admire amazing sunsets and an open view overlooking the entire valley below and the surrounding hills. There are several sitting/lounging areas with sunshades to enjoy dining alfresco, sunbathing or just to take in the view and spectacular sunsets.
Just in front of the main villa there is the outside dining area: a smaller garden surrounded by low walls, with a spacious table and an umbrella, a barbecue and a large hammock. The villa has a beautiful night lighting which illuminates the facades.
Due to the very thick stone walls, Villa Convento doesn’t require air-conditioning, even in the hottest months.
The famous town of Assisi, with its patron Saint Francis, revered around the world, is a short drive away. This is the Wine and Oil district of Umbria, where the best wines and excellent extra virgin oils are produced, the nearby town of Trevi sells some of the best olive oil in the world. Important Umbrian cities and places of interest like Perugia, Spello, Bevagna, Spoleto, Gubbio, Todi, Trasimeno Lake, are all easily reachable by car and make for wonderful day trips.
In the small village of Uppello, about 1 kilometre away (walkable) there is a basic shop, a small but well-stocked mini-market with bar, greengrocery, butchery and bakery). The villa is 5 kilometres from Foligno, with larger supermarkets and shops. Foligno is a fascinating city of art, history and culture. It offers many attractions for visitors, restaurants, museums, parks, monuments and cathedrals.
We think Villa Il Convento will provide a super base for a special family holiday.
