Tenuta Monacelli and Masseria Giampaolo are two beautiful majestic historic buildings set in wonderful olive groves just a short drive from the coast. Belonging to the same owner, they are linked together by a path and both offer superior accommodation with sumptuous dor and great service. Originally owned by local nobility, Monacelli was rented out for a brief spell as a convent during the 1700s Giampaolo was known as a working farm producing, amongst other things, a prestigious olive oil. The mill and underground cellars are still intact maintaining the historic character of the hotel.

The 25 rooms are a mixture of Standards, Superiors and Suites all beautifully restored keeping the original dimensions making them larger than usual, some with high vaulted ceilings. Elegance and comfort are the theme here and the generous use of Salento fabrics give a rich, luxurious feel. The Standard and Superior rooms open onto a courtyard and the sumptuous suites are located in the two towers. Common to all rooms are ensuite bathrooms with either bath or shower hairdryer, TV, telephone, mini-bar, safe and air conditioning.

As lovely as the rooms are, the hotel boasts the most spectacular outside areas. At Tenuta Monacelli the courtyard, with its shady trees and ancient paving, makes a great place to sit and read, chat or enjoy an early evening aperitivo. The real icing-on-the-cake is the huge and inviting swimming pool surrounded by grassy lawns, bright coloured flowers and age-old trees, which sits between the two buildings. You may wish to simply while away your time here, working up your appetite by doing a few lengths and then relaxing with a chilled drink and a tasty snack from the nearby bar.

Should you wish to dine without getting into your car, the restaurant Rifugio del Re is open for both lunch and dinner, serving a variety of dishes from the local area of Salento some traditional and some with a modern twist to them. The olive oil, still produced in-house, plays a large part in the recipes as do all the fresh vegetables and herbs which are grown in the gardens. A comprehensive wine list completes the picture ensuring you have the perfect accompanying wine with your delicious meal.

For the more adventurous, the great location of Tenuta Monacelli means that you can be on the coast in just a few minutes, either by car or by one of the mountain bikes available from the hotel. The cities of Brindisi and Lecce are a short drive away, and the wonderful Valle dItria makes for a great day out, as does the age ancient town of Gallipoli on the Ionian coast. Enjoy!
