Arrival day: Any Car hire: Recommended
Palazzo Margherita is located in the small hilltop town of Bernalda, just a ten-minute drive from the Ionian coast, where you'll find glorious stretches of long sandy beaches. Bernalda remains largely undiscovered one of a few remaining parts of Italy where the culture, food and wine remain truly authentic and untouched.
This 19th-century palazzo was built in 1892 by the Margherita family. The town was the birthplace and home to Agostino Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's grandfather, who always referred to it as Bernalda Bella. He acquired the Palazzo in 2005.
Completely renovated with the help of the acclaimed French designer, Jacques Grange, the Palazzo offers luxurious accommodation with big bedrooms, ornate communal rooms and a pretty courtyard opening out into the beautiful private gardens with a fabulous swimming pool.
Palazzo Margherita has seven spacious suites and two garden rooms all individually designed and furnished capturing the essence of being in a very special home.
Dining at Palazzo Margherita is taken very seriously and tailored to individual preferences. The Eat-In kitchen, where guests may share meals in a warm and homely atmosphere, offers excellent traditional fare. The chefs even give daily demonstrations of how to prepare typical Southern Italian dishes.
There are 3 bars to choose from during your stay:
Cinecittà Bar
A traditional bar and pizzeria overlooking the town square of Bernalda. The perfect spot for people-watching.
Family Bar
An intimate bar and dining room where guests may enjoy coffee or meals throughout the day and of course, aperitifs before lunch and dinner.
Pool Bar
Located in the gardens offering a selection of wine, cocktails and other drinks to enjoy while relaxing in the sun. Food from our main kitchen can also be ordered from here and delivered poolside.
Due to the connection with the film industry, the hotel also has a great Screening Room. This elegant room may be used during the day for some peaceful reading, playing cards or enjoying afternoon tea. At night, it becomes a cinema, equipped with professional quality sound and projection equipment, offering a vast database of films, including Francis's personal collection of Italian classics.
The nearest beach is Marina di Pisticci with white sand and blue sea the hotel will be happy to pack a delicious picnic or suggest where to eat some excellent fresh fish caught by the local fishermen.
With such sumptuous surroundings we think that guests will not be tempted to venture too far from Palazzo Margherita but should you wish to see some of this fascinating region, the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of Matera with its cave dwellings, is just a short drive away.
