Known as the ‘cuore verde d’Italia’ (green heart of Italy), Umbria remains undiscovered by mass tourism. Over the past few years the quality of holiday accommodation on offer has increased rapidly and now Essential Italy has many private villas, apartments for rental and a selection of quality hotels in our portfolio.
Choose from the options below to go straight to a property by name.
Umbria is Italy’s only region with no sea or foreign border and as such has managed to remain largely untouched by modernism and frenetic modern life. Many of those who live here bemoan this apparent lack of development, however for us visitors it is a blessing. Food and wine, as in much of Italy, play a fundamental role in everyday life. Olive oil from Umbria is amongst the best in the world, wine can be spectacularly good and local dishes are wonderful.
Umbria can match Tuscany step for step when it comes to places to visit. Perugia, the capital, is a bustling university town. Assisi is a highly important and beautiful pilgrimage venue, and of international importance. Spoleto in the east and Orvieto in the west offer stunning day trips (when in Orvieto you must pop over the border into Lazio to visit the sublime Civita di Bagnoregio). The hill top town of Todi is considered by Italians as one of the most perfect small towns in the whole of the peninsula. The list goes on and on but Umbria is best appreciated and understood by taking your time and simply wandering through its green rolling hills.
Large villages (Montefalco, Deruta, Bevagna) offer perfect stop offs and invariably fantastic watering holes. It is no surprise that many visitors return to Umbria and even settle here. We are proud to present Umbria and are sure its charms will entice our guests to return, our only word of warning is anyone starting a diet is best to wait till their return home! Buon appetito!!
Perugia, Florence, Pisa, Bologna, Bologna Forli, Rome – Ciampino or Fiumicino [see our Flights to Italy page].
As well as Umbria, we offer excellent holiday accommodation in: Tuscany, Sardinia, Puglia, Amalfi Coast and Sorrento and Sicily.
Just metres from the water’s edge, with views across to the archipelago of La Maddalena...
