Essential Italy

Sardinia

Sardinia

Sardinia is one of the best kept secrets in the Mediterranean. The island is best known for its crystal clear, turquoise tinted water that laps the tiny bays, rocky coves and long sandy beaches. Hotels, private villas with pools, houses & apartments for rental have been tastefully built and carefully dotted around the stunning coastline offering spectacular views across the sparkling sea.

Beach holidays are not the only way to spend time on Sardinia – the spectacular countryside offers a different but enchanting taste of the real Sardinia with entrancing scenery and unbelievable rock formations in unique settings. Whether you are looking for a self-catering holiday or a comfortable Sardinian hotel, Essential Italy can help you match your requirements perfectly.

Being the second biggest island in the Mediterranean, there is a wealth of fascinating places to visit during your holiday in Sardinia. In Northern Sardinia , the Costa Smeralda offers kilometres of stupendous coastline along with the stylish village of Porto Cervo with its designer boutiques and stupendous Marina of Porto Cervo, the Arcipelago of La Maddalena offers a completely different type of island life dating back to the genoese occupation, the small fishing village of Cannigione offers shops, fantastic restaurants and great beaches and Palau, which offers a taste of bustling day to day local life.

Moving down the island, Alghero, located on the west coast, is steeped on history with its impressive bastions and its beautiful catalan influence dating back to the Spanish domination. On the east coast, the small ports of of Arbatax and Tortoli are surrounded by beautiful scenery and little fishing harbours – perfect for a lazy lunch and a stroll in the sunshine. The mysterious and mountainous region of the Barbagia sits in central Sardinia where you will meet only shepherds as they herd their sheep to new pastures with their jangling bells echoing around the hillside.

The scenery changes dramatically as you approach Southern Sardinia - the land flattens out and the beaches stretch into the distance just perfect for a family beach holiday.

Sardinian food and wine has an excellent reputation and Essential Italy can strongly recommend that you sample the typical suckling pig accompanied by a good local Vermentino or Cannonau wine. The italian ice-cream is not to be missed either! Fig, olive and wild orange trees cover the countryside intertwined with vineyards that are heavy with fat and juicy grapes come the end of the hot summer.

The Island of Sardinia has a huge appeal to it and many have fallen under it’s spell over the years. Once you have become affected by the Sardinian sickness then you may find that you will have to revisit this magical part of Italy over and over again.
