The capital of Abruzzo, L’Aquila made the news for all the wrong reasons in 2009 when it was hit by a devastating earthquake, but this beautiful and ancient city, which suffered such damage, is slowly returning to its magnificent original state. The main port of Pescara is the gateway to Abruzzo with direct flights from England, Germany, Spain, France and Belgium. Abruzzo holidays are an opportunity to take advantage of the city’s vibrant social scene and sea front by night. The other main towns are Chieti and Teramo. Chieti is an ancient hilltop town about 15 kilometres inland, and Teramo is right on the northern border with Le Marche, both easily accessible when spending your holidays in Abruzzo.
Abruzzo is predominantly a rural region with high mountains and rolling hills that lead down to the coast. The countryside is dotted with hundreds of small towns and villages, all with their own history and charm, and many are home to Abruzzo holiday rentals. Other towns well worth visiting include Sulmona, Ortona, Lanciano, Castel di Sangro and Guardiagrele.
However you want to spend your holiday, Essential Italy’s properties to rent in stunning villas, apartments and hotels located in this delightful region will provide you with the perfect base for all sorts of Abruzzo holidays.
Abruzzo holidays have it all… the most southerly glacier in Europe, dramatic mountains with great skiing, expansive national parks with ancient forests, and an amazing variety of wildlife including wolves, bears and even lynx. The spectacular flora and fauna guarantee that mountain trekking from any of our Abruzzo holiday rentals will be a breath-taking experience. The region between the high peaks and the coast is dominated by agriculture, and Abruzzo produces some of the best olive oil in the world, alongside an extensive wine selection.
The Abruzzo coastline runs from Le Marche to Molise and the beaches are predominantly sandy. In the summer months, if you are spending your holidays in Abruzzo, you will find that the resorts are lively with bustling restaurants and bars. Abruzzo boasts 22 beaches that have been awarded Blue Flag status – meaning both the beach and the water are exceptionally clean, perfect for a luxury holiday by the sea.
Abruzzo holidays are golden opportunities to be treated to some of the best and most authentic cuisine in Italy, influenced by both the mountains and the coastal region. The high mountains to the west have ensured the region has remained isolated from foreign influence, and the local diet has remained unchanged for centuries. Some of the best olive oil in Italy comes from Abruzzo and the wine is excellent too, the most famous being Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. We’re sure that guests staying in our Abruzzo holiday rentals will love shopping in the traditional stores, cooking with the freshest ingredients and dining in the local trattorie (these offer value for money other regions only dream of).
To be honest, all of our Abruzzo holiday rentals are off the beaten track. Abruzzo has – for a long time – held its secrets close to its chest. It is home to 21 towns officially listed as amongst the most beautiful in Italy, and only Umbria has more. Abruzzo’s biggest secret is that it hasn’t changed, and while there are modern facilities and businesses, the day-to-day life in the towns and villages remains much as it was centuries ago. Holidays in Abruzzo are perfect for those seeking some dramatic and unique scenery and a pace of life long forgotten in most other areas of Europe.

Le Marche is one of the lesser known regions in Italy but with its’ cliff-backed bays running along the pretty Adriatic coast, its’ hilltop towns and impressive mountain range of Monte Sibillini, it is a treasure waiting to be discovered. Le Marche borders Abruzzo to the south, the tiny Republic of San Marino and Emilia Romagna to the north and Tuscany/Umbria to the west and with 173km of coast line is a great region to explore for both sun worshippers and culture-lovers. Many well-known people have come from this interesting region including the 19th century author, Giacomo Leopardi, the world famous children’s educator, Maria Montessori, the Renaiassance painter, Raphael and even the footballer, Lionel Messi has “Marchegiano” roots. Like its’ neighbours, Le Marche is predominantly a rural region with a wealth of small and windy roads climbing up through the glorious countryside to the Monte Sibillini National Park which stretches into neighbouring Umbria. The only “fast” road to be found in Le Marche runs along the coast.
The capital of Le Marche is Ancona with a growing International airport, a major ferry port, a super archaeological museum and fantastic views from the cathedral perched above the town. Other towns include historic Ascoli Piceno, Urbino the birthplace of Raphael, Macerata with one of the oldest universities in Europe, the northern seaside resort of Pesaro and the southern one of San Benedetto del Tronto. However you wish to spend your holiday, Essential Italy’s stunning villas, apartments and hotels located in this delightful region will provide you with the perfect base for all sorts of holidays in Le Marche.
Le Marche is a beautiful region, blissfully undiscovered and very hilly. Just a short drive from the coast will start the climb up in to the stunning countryside on the edge of the famous National Park of Monte Sibillini where there are 18 characteristic hill-top villages to explore. All tucked away in the mountains, they are packed with traditions, art, castles and monasteries - some dating back to the third century B.C. such as Cessapalombo. The valley of Acquacanina is famous for its’ Benedictine abbeys, and the fortified town of Arquata is still surrounded by ancient walls and gates. Visso, home of the park’s headquarters, is set among wooded hills where 5 river valleys converge in a location so inviting humans settled on the spot 900 years before Rome was founded. Amazing flora and fauna ensure that mountain trekking from any of our inland rental properties is a truly fascinating experience.
The Le Marche coastline runs from Abruzzo to Emilia Romagna giving you more than 170km of sandy beaches to explore. Starting in the north of the region, Pesaro offers a buzzing beach resort along with some amazing culture as it was the birthplace of Gioachino Rossini. A summer festival in his honour is staged every August. Driving down the coast you can stop at Fano, Marotta, Senigallia, Sirolo, Porto Recanati and finish in San Benedetto del Tronto, often known as the Riviera of Palm Trees and famous for its’ fishing industry. Le Marche is very proud to announce that many of its’ beaches have Blue Flag status meaning both the beach and the water are exceptionally clean, perfect for a beach holiday.
Le Marche holidays are great opportunities to sample to some of the best and most authentic cuisine in Italy, influenced by both the mountains and the coastal region. Cooking in the Marche is deeply rooted in peasant tradition and often the home cook, rather than the professional chef, rules. The use of top quality, locally sourced materials cooked with the minimum of fuss produces the very best fare in Le Marche and you will often find on the menu mushrooms, game, nuts, field herbs and truffles.
The biggest secret of Le Marche is that few people have taken the time to research this fascinating region and it is still relatively tourist-free. Due to its’ hilly terrain, the total population is wonderfully low - just over 1.5 million – making it a small paradise on the east coast of Italy. There is a myriad of secrets to be discovered in Le Marche – a couple of our favourites are the Festival of the Grape in Arcevia at the end of September and the Palio della Rana, a hilarious race with frogs in wheelbarrows on the first Sunday after Easter in Fermignano. Book a holiday in Le Marche with Essential Italy and let us know your favourite secret.
